New Lift Safety Standards
At A&R, worker safety is always our highest priority. We make sure to stay updated on changes to safety standards and train our employees accordingly. For 2019, our first order of business is to train our staff on the new lift safety standards that were recently implemented. As part of our commitment to our customers and our employees, we stay up-to-date with changes and training in all areas. This not only keeps our workforce safe, but it means that our crews are more efficient and our jobs are more cost-effective in the long run.

Equipment Changes

  • New Name: Aerial lifts will now be referred to as Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPS)
  • Active Load Sensing: Aerial lifts will be equipped with alarm-triggering sensors that stop the machine if it is performing beyond capacity (i.e., the machine is overloaded, or platform slope exceeds steepness level.)
  • Wind Force Requirements: There will be reduced capacities on scissor and vertical platform lifts.

Training Requirements
All supervisors should be trained to:

  • Select the proper MEWP for the job
  • Understand rules, regulations, and standards for safe MEWP operation
  • Know the hazards of using MEWPs and how to prevent them
  • Ensure the operation manual is stored on the MEWP

Businesses that use MEWPs are required to produce a safety plan including:

  • A detailed risk assessment of the job site
  • Comprehensible rescue plans
  • Supervisor monitoring of operator performance to ensure compliance
  • Steps for preventing unauthorized MEWP use
  • Steps for protecting workers not operating MEWPs

A&R Project Update
A&R is excited to be working on the renovation and expansion of the University of Illinois Civil Engineering Hydrosystems Lab. The finished project will include a pedestrian smart bridge over West Main Street, which will connect the hydro systems lab to the Newmark Civil Engineering Lab, providing state-of-the-art teaching labs, active learning classrooms, a design commons, senior design studio, and student collaboration space. This project will expand the area from 13,000 square feet to 43,669, which will more than double office space, offer hands-on instructional labs, new classrooms, and provide an elevator for proper accessibility. This project began in October of 2018 and will be in process through June of 2020.
